Sheffield
DIARY of Alice Gatty, written in Smith's Pocket Diary and Almanack 1878.
Small 8vo., green cloth, front board printed with gilt title. Every day is filled in, with 5-6 lines, mainly notes fairly humdrum domestic duties, housework, cooking, gardening, visits to Sheffield for shopping, theatricals, the weather. Her husband Stephen appears to have worked in the law as he frequently goes to the Sessions in various towns, and goes to 'chambers'. Her father arrives in October for the 'Congress': 'Went to meet Papa at Sheffield in the afternoon went to see the Ecclesiastical Art Exhibition with him and then to see Canon Walshaw', 'went in early to the Congress with Papa, lunched at The Wharncliffe. Saw over S. Marie's & dined at 4 with Canon Walshaw...'
1878.
£85.00
¶ Canon Walshaw was rector at St. Marie's. She sometimes visits Ecclesfield 'in the garden at Ecclesfield in the morning. Came into Sheffield in a cab...' 'Walked over to Ecclesfield to lunch had a talk with Lizzie about housekeeping.'. 'Dr Gatty and Diney only at home'. The Ecclesfield family is probably that of Alfred Gatty, the Vicar there, and local historian. 'Stephen' would be Stephen Herbert Gatty, who was called to the bar in 1874, and went on the north-eastern circuit. He later became a colonial judge, and was knighted. He married Alice Georgina Rawlinson in 1876. She died in 1894. His sister was the children's author Juliana Horatia Ewing, and his daughter by his second marriage married Siegfried Sassoon.
