WILLIAM MASON. SUMMING BOOK. FEBY. 5TH 1808. Farnham. Surrey. Price Five Shillings.
Pupils mathematics book, title page in manuscript as above, with calligraphic flourishes in the margins, and 143 pages of mathematics working. 4to, full vellum binding, vellum slightly darkened, name 'Wm. Mason Farnham' and date 1806 in manuscript on front board, with calligraphic flourishes. With heading such as 'Compound Division', 'Golden Rule in Decimals', 'Long Measure', 'Decimal Arithmetick Numeration', 'Duodecimals', 'Extraction of the Square Root'. Headings are usually written in a 'Gothic' style in bold, with flourishes. The book is completely full, with no blank pages. Loosely inserted are two letters dated 1894 and 1904, from teachers at Farnham Grammar School, to the son of William Mason, thanking him for the loan of he book, and commenting on it 'the books and teachers of 1808 were stimulating to a high degree. Though rules were expressed in language which to us seems quaint the examples given required considerable thought on the part of solvers of problems.... The Writing and Flourishes I am lost in admiration of...'
