  27. Lysons (Daniel), author FOUR LETTERS to William Sandys of St. Minver regarding the collection of material for his forthcoming History of Cornwall, with Sandys responses to his questions on the parish. Comprises: (i) Letter signed by Lysons, Hempstead Court, Sept. 5th 1812, saying he has been busy with other works, but had been 'in great hopes that during this time answers to our Queries would have arrived from all the Cornish Parishes & that we might have been able to have made our account of that Shire as complete as the nature of our work... would admit. I am sorry to say there are still several parishes from which we have had no communications. We are now however making every exertion in our power to get together the infomation of which we stand in need and to push our work through the press... a good proportion of it is completed and transcribed for the Printer.' Says he is sending some Queries for Sandys to answer. 27 lines, 4to, address panel. Loosely inserted is the list of 7 'queries' in Lysons' hand, with answers written above, untidily, by Sandys, plus more information. 4p, sm. 8vo. (ii) Letter dated Rodmarton Nov. 6th 1812. Refers to his use of two of Borlase's MSS lent him by Sir John St. Aubyn 'one containing his Memoranda for an intended parochial history the other pedigrees and brief notices of ancient families... his notes on St. Minver are rather scanty...' Quotes from Borlase's notes on the chapels, and their naming on Martyn's, Speed's and Nordens maps, and his notes on the family of De Cant, Lynam and Darell. Also refers to his disappointment in the slow sale of his work on the impoverished state of the clergy, the proceeds of which he had hoped to give to charity. 3p., 4to, with 1p of Sandys' untidy notes. Address panel. (iii) Letter signed by Lysons, Rodmarton, Dec. 10th, (1812) asking specific questions about the Manor of Trevelver and the Arundell family. 23 lines, 1p., sm. 8vo, docketed by Sandys with a few notes. With a reply from Sandys, to the two letters, Bath, Dec. 29th, 1812, giving Lysons much detail on the various Saints, local families, St. Minver, Porthilly, 'Dr. Borlase would have shone in his Heraldic researches, but in a parochial History, he was a little too credulous to be always correct'. 4p, 4to, very closely written. Also included is a list of all the parish registers of St. Minver, 'left with Mr. Davy. Dec. 18th. 1812.'' (iv) Letter dated Rodmarton Jan. 9th 1813., thanking Sandys, and assuring him he will be careful in dealing with Dr. Borlase's MS 'I shall not use Dr. Borlase ill or expose any error I may discover in his unedited work...' and criticising Mr Whitaker 'Mr W. is very coarse in his censure.... he threatened he would attack my Environs of London... we shall not retaliate... we shall not... expose his ignorance of ancient architecture... Dr Borlase MS with respect to the genealogy of Families will be highly useful.' Refers also to Norden, writes about Carew family, Roserrow, Porthillie, with some queries. There is a P.S. 'Dr. Borlase was a little wild on the subject of Druidism...' 3p, 4to, closely written. Address panel on verso. 1812-1813. £275.00
Lysons' Cornwall was published in 1814. The letters have obviously remained together as Sandys had asked in one of his letters to Lysons for his notes to be returned to him when the work was completed.

As the accounts were spread out leaving many blank pages the book has been used by a different owner(s) in the early nineteenth century to record barging, farm and churchwarden accounts. The original eighteenth century accounts comprise 63 pages, with many section headings, for example 'Bills unpiad when the Family went from Home', 'Bills contracted the Present year' (e.g. 'Mr Dew for Clothes for Mr Wyndham, and livery cloths for servants... £15.4.9d'), 'Home Estate Husbandry' (1 page clearly missing here), 'Husbandry at Broadfields', 'Husbandry at St. Briavels', 'Men Servants Wages' (23 servants named including 'Wm.
